Petroleum is the remains of ancient marine organisms, such as plants, algae, and bacteria, that fell to the bottom of the ocean. Once there, they were covered by soil and essentially condensed over millions of years into a substance we now call petroleum. This toxic, otherworldly substance that powers most of our transportation desires originated as lifeforms that like us, gathered energy and life from the sun.
