Black and White Triptychs, 1998 – 2000
After Graduating from Bard College in Photography, I worked at an educational farm in N.Y. State and then toured the Appalachian Mountain Range with The Bread & Puppet Theater. After these exciting adventures it was time to return to my native land- the San Francisco Bay Area. These large photos began as a result of my drive and an unusual medium-format camera.
As I drove I across this country, I was conflicted- I wanted to stop and photograph my newly discovered surroundings, while at the same time I wanted to move forward as quickly as possible, desiring only to get home. And so I took the images as I sped along the appropriate asphalted section, not knowing what the camera would see. Once settled in the Bay Area I developed the film and re-discovered where I had been. Interested in showing the massiveness of the landscape, I devised a method of printing three images onto one piece of paper- almost as large as life. The final prints are hand-made traditional silver-gelatin mural prints, measuring 3 by 6 feet.
